International Grant Program

  • Q
May I include the costs to prevent spread of COVID-19 such as voluntary isolation, hotel stay, and PCR test, as the travel cost?
    A
Yes, any expenses necessary for interaction during the activity can be included.
  • Q
Would it be a problem if I plan to visit other countries but can't actually travel due to travel restrictions caused by COVID-19 and end up communicating online with members from other countries?
    A
Depending on the situation, it could be possible that you end up having online interaction only. However, in the planning stage, please make plans on the assumption that you will be able to travel abroad and interact directly, especially in the latter half of the period.
  • Q
There are activity groups in several districts within the same country. May I include each of these groups in the project?
    A
Yes. You can include multiple districts within the same country as long as the project includes more than two target countries / regions specified in the program guidelines.
Example: Japan (Tokyo, Osaka) and Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai)
  • Q
Can non-target countries be included in the project?
    A
Yes they can, but only in addition to two or more target countries.
  • Q
Is there a set format for presenting tangible output? Who are the targets of tangible output?
    A
No, there is no set format. Program participants are expected to plan and carry out projects so as to optimize impact. This includes the creation and dissemination of tangible output. A variety of methods can be used to achieve this, including making policy proposals to government officials or other policy makers, staging photography exhibits or movie viewings in local communities, or disseminating information via social media.
  • Q
Does the grant cover personnel costs?
    A
Yes, it may cover personnel costs pertaining to the project, but only in cases where the institution is unable to shoulder such costs.
  • Q
May I use my own funds and/or external funds in addition to the grant from the Toyota Foundation?
    A
Yes. You can use your own funds and/or external funds. In view of the development and sustainability of the project, we recommend that you secure not only the fund from the Toyota Foundation, but also your own funds as well as other relevant institutions.
For external funds, please specify in your proposal “11. Other funding sources".
  • Q
Does the grant cover overhead and administrative expenses?
    A
No, it will not cover any overhead and administrative expenses.
  • Q
Does the grant program support charitable works, developmental projects, or scholarships?
    A
No. The grant does not support these fields.
  • Q
Does the grant support single-person projects?
    A
No. The grant only supports multi-member projects.
  • Q
Does the grant support the activities of a single institution?
    A
Yes, but the institution must have project members who are based in each applicable target country. Grant applicants are expected to form a diverse team comprising experts from different fields and backgrounds. The team members can include local residents, NPOs, researchers, creators, journalists and other media representatives, and government officials in target countries. Projects are expected to give back to society by applying findings through a variety of methods.
  • Q
Is a voluntary group eligible to apply?
    A
Yes, but please note that the grant is directed to individuals, not groups/organizations. The nationality and affiliation of the applicant such as voluntary groups, NGOs, universities, and private companies, do not matter. The same applies to project members as well.
  • Q
Do you accept multiple applications from one organization?
    A
Yes, but please note the grant is directed to individuals, not groups/ organizations. If a person is considering multiple projects, it is recommended to have prior consultation before
    applying.
  • Q
I want to apply for a one-year project. If the implementation period needs to be extended, can I apply for an additional project for the next year?
    A
It is possible to extend the project period if necessary. If you plan a new project as the next step, please apply for the grant in the following year.
Please note that the program is reviewed and revised every year and are subject to change
  • Q
May I apply for both the International Grant Program and other grant programs of the Toyota Foundation at the same time?
    A
Yes. However, it is not necessarily regarded as positive in the selection, considering the capacity in implementation. Prior consultation is advised.
  • Q
Which is more appropriate to apply for, the special subject program “Migrants and Japanese society” or the International Grant Program? Our project is about multicultural coexistence among Japanese people and people with foreign roots in Japanese society.
    A
It depends on the content of the project which program is suitable to apply, so please consult. These two programs have different aims and requirements from each other. For example, the International Grant Program requires the direct exchange and mutual learning, while the special subject program “Migrants and Japanese society” aims at building supportive mechanisms and environments.
  • Q
Regarding information dissemination, is it possible to continue operating the website after the project period is over? What about the cost during that period?
    A
Yes, it is OK to use the framework created during the grant period to disseminate information even after the grant period ends, as long as the expenses must be paid during the grant period, however. The duration of your project and that of the grant period is not necessarily equal.
  • Q
Can we request a program officer of the Toyota Foundation to participate in the events in the granted project?
    A
Yes, please provide information in advance when conducting events. When possible, a Program Officer will participate and observe the grant activities.
