The Asian Neighbors Program

What sorts of project expenses are covered by grants? |
Grants can cover any expenses incurred in the process of managing a project, such as costs for distributing information, personnel expenses (no more than 30% of the total budget request), domestic and overseas travel expenses, equipment and furniture, rental of property and effects payments, documents and materials, printing and copying, supplies, meeting expenses, etc. However:
- Grants provided under this program may not be used to cover incidental expenditures by the grant recipient’s organization, general administrative or overhead expenses. - Please refer to “Annex 1: Expenses” on page 15 of the application form.

Do you accept budget requests for purchasing machinery and equipment for the project? |
There is no restriction on purchasing these items if they are a necessary part of the project. However, applications for projects whose sole purpose is the purchasing of equipment will not be accepted.

Do grants support symposiums, performances, or scholarships? |
In principle, grants are not provided if holding such an event is the sole purpose of the project; however, certain cases are acceptable if they are an integrated part of the project’s overall activities.

Can my project receive grants from both the Toyota Foundation and other outside sources? |
Yes. However, please be sure to inform the Foundation if you are receiving grants from other external sources both before and during the grant period.

Can I list myself as the representative, the contact person, and account manager in the application form? |
Yes. Please be sure to choose the person that is the easiest for the Toyota Foundation to get in touch with as the contact person. If you delegate the task of accounting to your university, someone from its accounting staff can serve as the account manager.

Do you have any lists providing examples of estimated project budget items? |
No. Please plan your budget according to the actual situation in the country of the project.

Does the application for a special grant require any additional procedures? |
The application procedures are same as for the other types of grant. However, please be sure to discuss your plan with a Toyota Foundation program officer before submitting your application (contact details are listed above).

I cannot apply via the Toyota Foundation website, and would like to send my application by mail. Can the application form be downloaded from the Toyota Foundation website? |
No. Applicants who wish to submit their application by mail need to send a written request noted “Request for Asian Neighbors Program Application Forms” by mail or facsimile to the Toyota Foundation (contact details are listed above). Please provide your name, contact address, and phone number(s). When sending your application by mail, please make sure you send it prior to the deadline noted in “Information for Applicants”, and to send it by registered mail or acceptance-recorded mail, or by a courier service.
