Research Grant Program

Will you provide a grant for our research? |
A: Please first carefully read “Information for Applicants” to understand the objectives of our program. Among the applications submitted, the selection committee will decide which research projects are awarded grants, in accordance with the objectives of the grant.

What sorts of project expenses are covered by the grant? |
The grant covers a wide assortment of expenses related to conducting research, such as: information distribution and telecommunications, personal and travel expenses, equipment, property rental and the creation of printed materials. * Personal expenses covered differ for each grant type. Please carefully read “Table 1: Explanation of Expenses.” * The grant does not cover indirect costs of the organization to which the recipient is affiliated (including universities), such as general administration costs and overhead.

I do not belong to an organization. Can I still apply for a grant? |
Yes. Individual researchers are welcome to apply.

I have received grant from the Toyota Foundation in the past. Can I apply again? |
Yes. However, new applicants are prioritized in the selection process. Also, please be sure to consult with the program officers before applying if your proposed research is related to a project that received a Toyota Foundation grant in the past.

Can I apply for more than two types of grants? |
Yes. However, only one project can be awarded a grant even if you apply for a grant under both the joint and the individual grant types.

Is it possible to participate as a member of several joint research projects? |
Yes. However, please fill in the name of the project members who are definitely committed to joining the project. Please do not include the name of anyone who has no real commitment to being a project member.

Can the same person serve as the research representative, contact person, and account manager? |
Yes. Please be sure to choose the person that is the easiest for the Toyota Foundation to get in touch with as the contact person. If you delegate the task of accounting to your university, someone from its accounting staff can serve as the account manager.

Does the grant cover publishing? |
We do not offer grants only to cover the cost of publishing. However, if publishing is necessary for the research project, the cost of printing and binding a publication can be covered.

If my project is selected to be awarded a grant, can I receive the entire amount that I applied for? |
Not necessarily. In some cases the grant amount will be reduced the amount decided by the selection committee.

In the application materials, it says that funding for two-year grants is made in four installments. Does this mean the total amount of the grant will be divided into four separate payments? |
Yes. The total amount of the grant does not necessarily need to be divided into four equal installments, though. Payment can be made in allocations specified by the grant recipient after selection. However, the total amount of the grant will be decided by the selection committee.

What should I do if the members participating in my project change? |
Please submit a petition to change members after you have been notified of selection for a grant. At the time of application, please submit as much detailed information as you have, even if this is still incomplete or subject to change.
