Program Objectives

Since its establishment in 1975, the Toyota Foundation Research Grant Program has maintained an independent perspective befitting a grant program run by a private foundation and has provided grant support for research activities inspired by independent thinking and unfettered by the concepts and frameworks of the past. As last year, the basic theme for this fiscal year is "The Search for the Richness of Human Life and Activity." The program is soliciting proposals for creative and socially meaningful research projects that mesh with this theme.

At a time when societies are becoming increasingly fluid and undergoing radical changes, and when bonds between people are increasingly disrupted, we face many common challenges in which a variety of factors, including widening economic disparities, the disintegration of communities, and destruction of the natural environment, may be intertwined. Amid ongoing specialization and segmentation of disparate fields of research, however, vast amounts of knowledge are being accumulated but we find it difficult to find clear answers to the complex challenges of the present age.

This program supports research incorporating the sort of cross-disciplinary vision that produces organic interaction and leads to synthesis---research activities in which areas that tend to be segmented into opposing categories, such as social and scientific, academic and practical, and tacit knowledge and formal knowledge, interact and become integrated. By means of this sort of research activity, which is grounded in our voracious intellectual curiosity, we hope to help establish societies brimming with sensitivity and imagination, where pluralistic values are mutually respected.

Through these efforts, the Toyota Foundation seeks to contribute to the development of better societies that will foster rich relationships among people and between people and nature. This program is open to anyone in Japan or anywhere else who has a strong commitment to the cause of generating and integrating new knowledge---not only scholars and people with practical expertise but also activists and practitioners from outside the establishment. We hope for a positive response from all potential candidates.
