Applying for a Grant

The Toyota Foundation is dividing its grant programs into five broad categories. Categories are further subdivided into themes and issues on which research will be conducted. Please be advised that application periods and activation dates differ from program to program.

This page explains the content of each program and how to apply for a grant. Those interested are encouraged to apply for a grant in their area of research.

Applications Open

Under the basic theme of "Forming a Sustainable Framework Within the Locality: Toward a New Community of Self-support and Symbiosis," this program supports ambitious projects with local residents as the main actors creating frameworks that will lead to concrete solutions to issues their communities face in the course of their revitalization and advancement. There are three categories; (a) revitalizing the local community, (b) promoting symbiosis in the community, and (c) fostering young generations to carry the community forward.

This program is limited to activities in Japan.Available only in Japanese.

Asian Neighbors Program

With the basic theme "Toward Community Formation Based on Mutual Reliance and Collaboration," it supports projects that aim to resolve issues in Asia through the formation of transregional networks.

In fiscal 2009, under the basic theme of "Toward Community Formation Based on Mutual Reliance and Collaboration," this program solicits practical projects that aim to resolve the issues faced by Asian communities from the perspectives of "relationships with nature" and "relationships with people." It supports practical projects in the fields of (1) relationships with nature, (2) culture, and (3) social systems that incorporate new viewpoints, energy, and knowledge while still respecting traditional cultures and wisdom, such as efforts to promote the creation of communities by forming networks with neighbors and to eliminate obstacles to network and community development.

Application Announcement

Preservation, Utilization, and Transmission of Indigenous Documents in Asia (Special Subject)

Applications closed

This Special Subject is a continuation of the former Research Grant Special Subject "Preservation, Compilation, and Annotation of Indigenous Documents in Peripheral Regions of Asia," for which grants were provided until fiscal 2008. It is being relaunched in fiscal 2009 as the Asian Neighbors Program Special Subject "Preservation, Utilization, and Transmission of Indigenous Documents in Asia."

Indigenous documents are precious local resources and can even be described as foundations of community identity; yet, in every region they are in danger of disappearing. This Special Subject supports projects in which teams with diverse participants work to preserve, utilize, and transmit indigenous documents. This year it covers a full range of materials written by hand, including ancient maps and letters, from the whole Asian region.

Communication with Society Program (Applications not publicly solicited)

This is a program that transmits and disseminates to society the results of grant projects in the Foundation's three publicly solicited programs. The Foundation selects candidate projects through monitoring and other means and cooperates with grant recipients to ensure that results are transmitted and disseminated to society in an effective manner. Grants are provided for communicating with society through a variety of means, including not only printed publications but also visual media (films, videos, DVDs, manga, etc.), digital media (websites, e-mail newsletters, etc.), symposiums, workshops, and use of the mass media. The total amount of grants is scheduled to be ¥40,000,000.
