Publication of a Chinese Translation of Volumes 1 and 2 of Anthony Reid’s “Southeast Asia in the Age of Commerce: 1450–1680” (Foundation Initiative Grant)

This work represents the results of a project entitled “Translation and Publication of ‘Southeast Asia in the Age of Commerce: 1450-1680’ (two volumes) into Chinese” (D06-P-008), for which a Foundation Initiative Grant was awarded in fiscal 2006. (The Foundation Initiative Grant Program, which ended in fiscal 2007, was devoted to providing support for projects recognized as likely to contribute to the development of new grant programs, as well as projects conducted jointly with other foundations and institutions.) Professor Anthony Reid, the author of the original work, is a leading authority on Southeast Asian studies and the recipient of a Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize for academic research in 2002. In “Southeast Asia in the Age of Commerce”, one of his most important works, Professor Reid presents the concept of an “age of commerce” and explains the central role played by Southeast Asia in a wide-reaching network as regional spheres of trade interconnected and the world became increasingly unified between the mid-fifteenth and the late seventeenth centuries.
The grant project was prompted by the fact that relatively few books on Southeast Asia have been published in Chinese. For the project, three Chinese specialists on Southeast Asia, based in China and overseas and led by Xiao An Wu of Peking University, translated both volumes of the original work from English into Chinese (simplified characters). The translation has been published in China.
China’s ties with the nations and peoples of Southeast Asia have grown closer as its economy has boomed in recent years. Although information is increasingly available online, we hope that the publication of a Chinese translation of this internationally well-regarded work will give Chinese readers a deeper understanding of the history and culture of Southeast Asia, and will provide a boost to the development of Southeast Asian studies.
