Publication of Land Equalization in 1839 in Binh Dinh Seen from the Land Records (Research Report Grants)
update : 17/11/2009

This book presents the results of a project that received grants from the Southeast Asia National Research Program in 1999 and 2002 under the title "Research on the 1839 Land Redistribution Policy Under the Rule of Emperor Minh Mang." Following its publication in Vietnamese with a grant in fiscal 2003, it has now been published in English with the help of a Research Report Grant awarded in fiscal 2006.
Minh Mang, who ruled from 1820 to 1841, was the second emperor of the Nguyen dynasty. In 1839 he instituted a land redistribution law in an attempt to increase communal ownership of rice fields. Using the new research method of statistical analysis based on information obtained from cadastral registers, Dr. Thao reveals the true impact of the law and the reality of the land ownership situation in Vietnam in the first half of the nineteenth century. Very little historical research using primary materials is done in Vietnam, making this project extremely valuable---especially now that its results are available in English.
