This is one of the outcomes of a project entitled “The Gonganpu, the Minutes of the Kong Koan of Batavia Source Publication,” which the Foundation supported under the Foundation Initiative Grant Program in 2007. This volume is the 8th of the total 12 volumes of the Chinese Council of Batavia archives Series. The Kong Koan archives contain important social, political and demographic material concerning the history of the Chinese urban community of the Indonesian capital Jakarta (formerly named Batavia under the Dutch colonial period). All important decision making on the social and economic affairs of the Chinese community can be closely followed in this source over a period of 150 years (1787~1978). This collection is the only remaining archive of a Chinese overseas urban community, covering that continuous period, thus has a great value for historians who are interested in changes of the social structure of the Chinese community in Southeast Asia.
