Materials on East Timor during World War II Published

update : 08/08/2008

Materials on East Timor during World War II is the outcome of the project "Documents, Literature, and Interviews on East Timor During the Period of Japanese Occupation," which was carried out with Foundation Initiative Grants awarded in fiscal 2002, 2003, and 2004.

During World War II, East Timor was a colony of Portugal, a neutral country; it was thus regarded as an important location in terms of international relations and was occupied by the Japanese army. This project, conducted in the wake of East Timors independence from Indonesia in May 2002, involved surveying historical records relating to the Japanese occupation and conducting interviews with relevant figures, including from the perspective of how East Timors distinctive history was shaped. The research was undertaken in locations as far apart as Australia, Britain, East Timor, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Portugal, Taiwan, and Vatican City.

Materials on East Timor during World War II is the first bibliography of historical materials discovered and collected so far in the process of researching East Timor during the period of Japanese occupation, and all of the entries include English translations. The book is expected to assist in the assembly of basic data for studies of history and international relations, thus promoting academic research and contributing to the formation of the national identity of the East Timorese people.
